The River Song

At the edge of a singing river, Theo wanted to leap across at once, but the stones were too far apart and the water hummed a worried tune. Theo stamped, impatient. Milo remembered the slow breath Lumi had taught him on the very first night, and thought it might help here too.

Milo shared that breath with Theo: in slowly, out slowly, until the humming softened. A quiet girl named Ava was listening from the bank, and she showed them a line of flatter stones no one had noticed in a hurry. Patience had quietly made room for the answer.

One calm step at a time, they crossed together, with Pip riding on Milo's shoulder. Ava waved goodnight, already a friend. Theo admitted the slow way had been the sure way, and the river sang them gently toward sleep.
